A country little known for its tourism (even if it is developing more and more), Greenland is a land of ice far from the reality we know.
When we think about it for 5 minutes, living in Greenland seems rather unlikely. Even though this land has been inhabited for a long time!
Also, this island is not short of space because it is the second largest in the world and the least densely populated country, with about 56,000 inhabitants. However, if you are considering settling there, you should know that this low population density is probably because 80% of the island is covered with ice and that living conditions are particularly extreme.
Its name comes from the Vikings who called it "Greenland" to encourage colonization. Pretty tempting, with a name like that, isn't it?
For those who are convinced to spend their next holidays there, don't worry, even if the official languages are Greenlandic and Danish, English is generally well understood.
Greenland is a constituent part of the Kingdom of Denmark. This means that Greenland is part of Denmark, which grants it a status of self-government with a greater or lesser degree.
As far as geography is concerned, locating Greenland on a map can be more complicated than you might think. It is generally known that Greenland is close to the North Pole and is located between Canada and Iceland. But we don't realize that this country has a much more central role than we imagine. Indeed, Greenland is located by plane at about 4h30 from Paris, 4h from New York and 3h15 from the North Pole!
Despite harsh living conditions, the people of Greenland have adapted their lives to the local conditions and are used to temperatures as low as -30°C in winter. As far as transport is concerned, the inhabitants move around according to the season: by boat during, or during the winter by plane or helicopter.
During winter, everything is frozen for 5 months and the inhabitants are cut off from the rest of the world. In order to survive, during this period, they resort to fishing, but they also stock a lot of supplies and food, so they have several freezers.
Be careful for those who are fonder of snow and ice, be warned that the air there is extremely dry, so the snow is impacted and therefore contains little water. You cannot make snowballs because the snow is not sticky enough.
