Women in Science at Froilabo | Carlota Conchello Canizares

To celebrate International Women’s Day we take time to catch-up with Carlota Conchello Canizares, our Production Engineer. Here she reveals what a typical day looks like for her and the production team. She tells us what she likes most about her job and offers advice to other females looking to kick start their career in science and technology.

What or who inspired you to pursue a scientific lead career?

As a kid, I enjoyed playing construction and handicrafts, so I guess I have always been curious about production processes and manufacturing. I can’t think of a specific person that inspired me to pursue a scientific career. Later, during my Engineering Degree, I had the chance to be surrounded by brilliant women that helped me confirm the potential we have within the scientific community.

Can you describe a typical day?

At Froilabo the production team have their own little routines. Every morning I animate an orders’ review, planning check-up or production progress reunion. After that, days are always different and unpredictable. These past few months, we have been working on industrial optimization, we have been trying new organization and work methods to improve our production capacity and efficiency.

What do you like most about your job?

What I enjoy the most about my job is its transversal and cross-disciplinary nature. I have the opportunity to work with all Services at FROILABO: Research & Development, Quality, Commercial and After-Sales – I feel lucky to continue learning from them daily. I particularly enjoy participating in new product development projects as they require a large panel of abilities working together with shared goals.

What is the one piece of advice you would give to a woman considering science as a career?

Go ahead! If you love science and work hard, any doubt you may have will be cleared on your path to success. Enjoy what you do and discover every day.

What would we most likely find you doing at the weekend / spare time?

I would love to answer “Traveling, discovering new places, kinds of food and people” but nowadays it is more like “Online Happy Hours with friends, books and home-workouts”.

As a woman in science, have you come across any barriers?

One of the barriers I encountered was my own perception. As the industrial world lacks female representations, it can be hard to project yourself as an engineer, a scientist, a manager… My advice would be to talk about it with your friends and colleagues and try to transform your own insecurity into hope for the future! I believe the workplace is changing and we must take advantage of this impulse for building in an inspiring and supportive environment for women.

On a broader scale, how can we encourage more women in science?

I believe an open-minded and non-gendered education for girls is key. Young generations are intelligent and determined, if we show them the way, I am confident they will come along.
